About me

Picture of Sheryl Freer with her medals from the IX Tae Kwon-Do World Championships, Telford, 2010. My name is Sheryl Freer and I am currently a 4th degree black belt with the Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain.

I began training in 1996 and found that Tae Kwon-Do offered me everything I had been looking for: fitness, self defence and most of all a challenge!

Through this time, I have competed in many major competitions including travelling to Einhoven (Holland) to compete in the European Championships.

Tae Kwon-Do has given me a whole new outlook on life itself. Not only am I fitter, stronger and more confident in myself but it has also provided me with a new life-time ambition and I look forward to every challenge that it has to offer!

My future goals are to pass on my knowledge of Tae Kwon-Do to my students and to keep my club running successfully to a high standard.

The TAGB was honoured to perform two demonstrations at the opening ceremonies of Rotary International's 100th anniversary international convention, which was held at the National Exhibition Center (NEC), Birmingham, on Sunday 21st June 2009.

I was part of the the TAGB demontration team that performed in front of world leaders and 25,000 spectators including:

  • the President of the Rotary International, Mr. Lee Dong-Kurn (from South Korea)
  • the President of South Korea, Lee Myung-Bak
  • the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon
  • Archbishop Desmond Tutu
  • a member of the Royal family

There were also many other celebrities in attendance, and BBC television filmed the opening ceremonies.

I train under my instructor (and husband) Mr. James Freer 6th Dan (who was a flag bearer on the day). James and I were meant to be celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary on the day of the demos - but plans were changed and Tae Kwon-Do took over the day. Tae Kwon-Do is what we both do. If it wasn't for Tae Kwon-Do we would never have met and so at least we would be together on our anniversary doing what we love most!

I thoroughly enjoy taking part in Tae Kwon-Do competitions and over the years I have won many trophies and medals. In addition to my most recent accomplishments, I have taken part in the last three Tae Kwon-Do World Championships winning Gold in the ladies black belt sparring in 2007 and 2010!
